NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — As Southeast Louisiana prepares for Tuesday's winter weather, warming centers and shelters are being opened across the area. WGNO meteorologists are forecasting that several inches of snow are expected across the Gulf Coast. Fire reported at former Six Flags in New Orleans East Parish and city leaders are gearing up for the weather event by announcing school closures and possible road closures. As residents make their final preparations and plans, parishes across the area are opening warming centers and shelters for residents. Orleans Parish A warming center will be open starting at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, for those in need. Rosenwald Recreation Center at 1120 S. Broad Ave., New Orleans Those in need of shelter during the winter weather can visit the following locations: The Salvation Army at 4526 S. Claiborne Ave., New Orleans Ozanam Inn at 2239 Poydras St., New Orleans New Orleans Mission at 1130 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., New Orleans Low Barrier Shelter at 1530 Gravier St., New Orleans Jefferson Parish Two warming centers opened on Sunday, Jan. 19, for people and pets in need. Terrytown Playground at 641 Heritage Ave., Terrytown Ree Alario Special Needs Center at 6900 Saints Drive, Metairie How to protect pipes, plants and pets from the cold St. John the Baptist Parish Parish officials said two warming centers will be open starting on Monday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. Residents are advised to bring additional blankets, food and snacks. Blankets and cots will be available. West Bank Public Safety Complex at 5739 Highway 18, Wallace Garyville Fire Station #71 at 418 Historic West St., Garyville Lafourche Parish Parish officials said a warming shelter will open on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m. and remain open through the winter weather event. Lockport Community Center at 5610 LA-1, Lockport Terrebonne Parish Parish officials said a warming shelter will be open to residents starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19. The shelter will be open until Wednesday, Jan. 22, and residents are advised to bring food, snacks, medications, personal hygiene items and other items needed for three days. West Houma Gym at 800 Willams Ave., Houma St. Charles Parish St. Charles Parish officials said a warming shelter will open on Monday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m. for residents in need of a warm place during the winter weather. Parish officials said residents should arrive no later than 11 p.m. and residents should bring additional blankets, snacks and water. Edward A. Dufresne Community Center at 274 Edward Dufresne Parkway, Luling Hancock County A warming center will be open in Hancock County from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, through Wednesday, Jan. 22.
