NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — With temperatures set to drop over the next few days, people are weary about what's to come. "We keep pretty stocked up on, like, beans and probably just, like, empty the freeze. If we lose power, I have a decent amount of my freezer right now," said New Orleans resident Marissa. "I'm a fly by the seat of my pants kind of girl. so, no, I'm not preparing whatsoever. I'm just going to ride it out. I don't think anything's going to happen, though," said New Orleans resident Sadie. Southeast Louisiana officials brace for freezing temperatures During frigid temperatures, Dr. Jonathan Schoen with University Medical Center New Orleans says burn incidents are more common. "People do things like they'll be like, oh my gosh, I'm so cold. Let me heat a pot of water and I'm going to put my feet in it, and they end up burning their feet. Putting heating pads all over themselves and then falling asleep, and then they wake up with second or third-degree burns from the heating pads," said Schoen. Schoen says the best way to avoid hypothermia is by wearing the proper clothing, especially if you plan to go outdoors. It's also important to pay attention to early signs. "They take their shoes off and they see that bright red or model the, you know, checkerboard looking appearance or some areas are discolored, some areas are white, or even the whole foot is light. And so those are the early, visible and sensation signs that it's happening," said Schoen. He adds that everyone should own carbon monoxide detectors, explaining during freezing temperatures, carbon monoxide could become a silent killer. "People could have their electricity go out and have to fall back on other ways to stay warm. Whether it's a fireplace or gas-powered or wood fireplace, that's a good idea and safe way to protect yourself a little bit, is to have a working carbon monoxide detector," said Schoen.
