RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The gunman who police said killed a man and injured another during Friday’s shooting at the North Hills shopping plaza in Raleigh has died. According to a Sunday news release, Raleigh police identified the shooter as 34-year-old George Colom Jr. and said he was dead as a result of his injuries. Raleigh police said a man walked into the Coquette restaurant in North Hills before shooting and killing another person. A third man standing nearby was also shot, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said. The shooting suspect then shot himself and was taken to a nearby hospital, which is where he ultimately died from his injuries, police said. Authorities identified the man killed during Friday’s shooting as Jonathan Schaffer, who worked as the manager of Urban Food Group, which owns Coquette, according to Schaffer’s LinkedIn. Police said he was released from the hospital after undergoing treatment. One day prior to the announcement of Colom’s death, his father George Colom Sr. released the following statement to CBS 17: “My family is saddened by the loss of Mr. Schaffer and we grieve for his family. We also share the pain with Mr. Aguilar. We are focused on our own son right now and want our privacy respected during this time. My son will soon pass away and we just want to bury our son in peace. No further questions or comments will be addressed.” During the investigation, Raleigh police revealed that all parties involved in the shooting knew each other and this wasn’t a random incident.
