Get ready for the coldest stretch we’ve seen in over two years. Arctic air blasts its way into the Carolinas overnight into Monday as temperatures drop like a rock. Lows will mainly end up in the teens and single digits Monday morning, while stiff northwesterly winds could knock another 10-20° off of the feels-like temperatures. Wind chills in the High Counry may drop as low as -20° to kick off MLK Day. Highs will struggle to climb above freezing for most of the week ahead as overnight lows mainly reside in the teens and 20s. The cold air is a certainty, but our snow chances are not. Medium- and short-range models are holding firm with a more southeasterly storm track, which would whiff most of the Metro and northwestward as the moisture arrives Tuesday night. Areas south and east of I-85 have the better opportunities for measurable snow, but most locations in the WCCB Charlotte viewing area will see under an inch. Chesterfield County in South Carolina and Anson & Richmond counties in North Carolina have the best chances to see significant snow. Any trend to the northwest could drastically increase totals, but expectations would be best tempered to 1-2″ for now. Some models are showing another pulse of energy and moisture along the Carolina coastline between Thursday and Friday, but this should stay well east of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area. Warmer air arrives by next weekend as sunny skies return to the Queen City. While isolated rain chances hover around the Carolinas on Saturday and Sunday, most models keep the showers light and temperatures in the mid-50s. Tonight: Clear and brisk. Dangerous wind chills NW. Low: 22°. Wind: NW 10-20. Gusts: 25+ MLK Day: Cold sunshine. High: 35°. Wind: NW 5-15. Monday Night: Another frigid night. Low: 18°. Wind: NE 5-10. Tuesday: Clouds build. Snow showers SE. High: 33°. NE 5-10.
