BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — This weekend, thousands of runners across the globe descended on Baton Rouge for the 14th annual Louisiana Marathon, celebrating community, culture and endurance.
Mike Wattigny, marketing director for the Louisiana Marathon, said the event showcases the best of Baton Rouge.
“Well, the main goals of the marathon overall have been to highlight and show off the capital city to all of our friends from around the country. We’ve got 48 states represented and visitors coming in from 15 different countries,” Wattigny said.
The marathon highlights Baton Rouge’s charm from the scenic downtown route to the finish line festivities. But for Cade Litolff, who crossed the finish line first, the marathon was a personal milestone.
“All of the hard work I’ve put in the past building up to this race I think really motivated me to lock down and go all out,” Litolff said.

The marathon proved to be more than just a race. With over 7,000 participants this year, Wattigny estimates the event generates $5 million in economic impact.
“They’re coming in, they’re staying in hotels, they’re eating in the restaurants, they’re shopping at area shops. And in January, you know, in this part of town it’s usually pretty slow,” Wattigny said.
For organizers, it’s a way to bring the community together and showcase Louisiana’s rich culture.
“It is a celebration of all things Louisiana and just goes to show that you can have a good time and still be healthy at the same time,” said Wattigny.
