MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A man is in the hospital after being struck by gunfire while he was sleeping Sunday morning. At 4:32 a.m., officers responded to an assault involving a firearms discharge in the 600 block of Tate Ave. When they arrived, they spoke with a male victim who was laying on the floor with a gunshot wound. He said he'd been shot while he was sleeping. Officers spoke with a female victim on the scene who said that she was sleeping and around 4:20 a.m., she heard several gunshots coming from the rear of the apartment. She said that both she and the male victim jumped down to the floor. While they were both on the floor, the male victim noticed he was bleeding from his head and yelled, "I'm hit. I'm hit." Man killed in downtown shooting A third victim (a woman) said she was in bed asleep when she thought she heard several gunshots coming from the back of her home. She said she heard her son screaming he was shot and immediately ran to him. The male victim was taken to Regional One in non-critical condition but was upgraded to critical condition. As officers investigated, they located several points of entry in the upstairs bedroom, downstairs, walls, closet and rear window. Officers searched the rear of the apartment and located shell casings, projectiles and fragments. They also checked nearby homes and all residents said that they were not hurt.
