Euclid has announced that it will be completing the work started last year on expanding Upland Sims Park, 23131 Lake Shore Blvd., anticipating that by this spring people will be able to take in some of the unique features of one of the city’s newest parks. The city purchased the land that will be used to expand the park in 2020, according to a previous report, as the city wanted to preserve the diverse urban forest and ravines which are scarcely found in the area. Planning and Development Director Patrick Grogan-Myers said in a recent interview that the community has given the city a few ideas on what to do with the area, and that the plan was to maintain the green space that has already been established. “It’s a green space now and it’s never been developed as far as we can tell,” Grogan-Myers said. “We are maintaining that way largely. We are creating a trail, adding landscaping, lighting, signage, and some features that will help celebrate the natural amenities and the wildlife that use that site. “There is a lot of deer, it’s a great birding site during the migratory season when they are seeking shelter in that wooded area.” Last April, the city announced plans to eliminate invasive plants on the property, in preparation for rebuilding some of the native habitat as well as other improvements, all with a budget of $499,000 approved at the time. “There was some preliminary site grading that was done towards the late end of last year,” Grogan-Myers said. “By the time that we got grant awards, grant sign off, as well as all the necessary permitting it was pretty late into the construction season last year.” He added that the city was hoping to have the trail paved by now, but that increased snowfall late last year caused a slight delay in finalizing the construction. “It pushed it back maybe about a month,” Grogan-Myers said. “But we are still expecting the project to be wrapped up this spring.”
