WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Live updates from Detroit, as the Washington Commanders are on the road in the divisional round of the playoffs, taking on the top seed in the NFC, the Detroit Lions.
1st Quarter:
After the defense forcing a three and out to start the game, the Commanders offense methodically moved down the field. However, the drive stalled, as Washington went for it on 4th down, coming up short on a Marcus Mariota QB sneak.
After the defensive stop, the Lions went 71 yards on six plays, capped off by a Jahmyr Gibbs 1-yard rushing touchdown, making it 7-0 Detroit.
The Commanders responded, getting their first points of the game on a ten play, 41-yard drive, ending in a Zane Gonzalez 47-yard field goal. Washington trailing 7-3 with 3:50 in the first quarter.
On their next drive, Detroit marched right down the field, but the drive stalled in the red zone, as Jared Goff gets sacked by Dorance Armstrong, coughing up the football, leading to the first turnover of the game recovered by Frankie Luvu.
Commanders trail the Lions 7-3 after one quarter of play.
2nd Quarter:
After the turnover, Washington capitalizes, going 78 yards in eleven plays. Brian Robinson Jr. punches it in on the ground on 2nd down from two yards out, as the Commanders get their first lead of the game, 10-7, four minutes into the quarter.
Midway through the quarter, Detroit responds. Goff finds tight end Sam LaPorta in the end zone for the two-yard touchdown. LaPorta making an incredible one-handed catch to give the Lions the 14-10 lead with 7:44 left in the half.
However, wasting no time, the Commanders strike back. Jayden Daniels throws a quick screen to wide receiver Terry McLaurin, as the 2nd-team all-pro takes it 59 yards for the score. Washington leads 17-14 with 6:23 left in the first half.
Lions looking to respond. On 2nd & 9, Jared Goff's pass is intercepted by Quan Martin, who returns it 40 yards for the touchdown. Commanders score 14 points in a minute, and take the 24-14 lead over Detroit.
The shootout continues. Detroit bounces back from the turnover, as Jameson Williams takes the reverse 61 yards to the house. Washington's lead gets cut to three, as they lead 24-21 with under four minutes remaining in the half.
After the quick Detroit TD, Washington comes right back down with another score. A seven play, 70 yard drive capped off by a Jayden Daniels 5-yard TD pass to Zach Ertz. Commanders lead 31-21.
Under two minutes left in the half, Detroit looks to get points. However, Goff is intercepted in the end zone by Mike Sainristil. Commanders kneel out the half with the 31-21 lead.

3rd Quarter:
After forcing the Commanders to punt, the Lions drive right down the field in six minutes, as Gibbs scores his second rushing touchdown of the night. Detroit cuts the deficit to three, as Washington leads 31-28 with 6:57 left in the quarter.
Commanders maintain 31-28 lead heading into the 4th quarter.
4th Quarter:
Commanders cap off a 15-play, 70 yard drive with a Brian Robinson Jr. rushing TD. With 13:29 left in the game, Washington leads 38-28.
On the next drive, Detroit tries a trick play near midfield. Jameson Williams attempts a pass to Gibbs, but is intercepted by Sainristil. The rookie with two interceptions in the game, the 4th Detroit turnover, as Washington takes over with 12:04 left.
After the interception, Washington turns the turnover into points. Jeremy McNichols punches it in from short. Commanders lead 45-28 with 7:31 remaining.
With no time to waste, Detroit drives down the field in under two minutes, kicking a field goal to bring the score with two scores. Washington leads 45-31 with 5:45 left in the game.
After recovering an onside kick attempt, Washington takes it into field goal range. However, Zane Gonzalez misses a 44-yard field goal, keeping the score at 45-31 in favor of the Commanders.
Lions with a last ditched effort. Jared Goff is intercepted for the third time.
