What a difference a weekend makes. It was only nine days ago that Rider hit the lowest of lows when it lost by 18 points at what was at the time a winless Canisius. Now? The season has life. Flash Burton scored a career-high 21 points — 17 in the second half — and the Broncs went into McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and handed first-place Marist its first MAAC loss, 64-57, on Saturday night. “Sometimes it just takes one win to get guys rolling and get some confidence,” coach Kevin Baggett said. “There are so many highs and lows in a season, and we just kept reminding our guys we’re right there. When you start winning these games, some of the bounces start to go your way as well.” Burton, a freshman from Philadelphia, was the star in the second half. He took the game over with 13 of his 17 second-half points after Marist went on a 14-2 run to grab the lead with 11:36 remaining. He had a steal and dunk to put the Broncs up 57-51 with 2:23 remaining and then hit the dagger on the next possession when he swished in a 3-pointer at the 1:20 mark. Burton has made four 3s in the last two games after making just two through the first 16. “I just wanted to play hard for my teammates,” Burton said. “That’s really what motivates me every time I step on the court. Just playing with my friends, playing with my brothers. These guys became my brothers the last six months. Tariq Ingraham recorded his third double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and T.J. Weeks Jr. finished with 13. Rider (7-11, 3-4) moved into a logjam for fifth place in the MAAC while winning its sixth true road game, which ranks tied for second nationally with six other schools. Josh Pascarelli led Marist with 21 points, but was held to 6-for-21 shooting. The Red Foxes (13-3, 6-1) had their nine-game winning streak snapped. “That’s the MAAC,” Baggett said. “I tell our guys all the time that if we continue to work hard we’ll give ourselves a chance to get back in this league. I don’t know where we’ll end up, but I knew we’d get back. I trust these guys.”
