RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- In just hours, a social media platform that redefined online content creation, TikTok, may disappear for U.S. users. The Supreme Court recently declined to block a law that would effectively ban the app starting Sunday, leaving TikTok’s future in limbo. For more than 100 million American users, this means no more scrolling, liking, commenting or sharing videos on the platform that has become a cornerstone of digital culture. The potential ban is sparking alarm among content creators who have built careers and livelihoods on TikTok’s unique ecosystem. Diego Ramos, a 19-year-old TikTok creator with over one million followers, began making videos purely for fun. “In the beginning, it was just for myself. I wasn’t trying to make money," Ramos said. "So, when the money started coming in, it was even better. I get to get paid and I get to do what I like." Over time, his lighthearted comedy videos turned into a sustainable income stream. TikTok enabled Ramos to buy a car, pay for college and support himself financially for years. “You just post videos, you build a community, make other people laugh. You know, you get support," Ramos said. "It’s like the best job in the world, honestly." For Ramos, the platform represents more than financial success. “That little kid that was making videos at nine and 10. Now, he’s grown a platform, he’s making money doing that, sustaining himself doing that," Ramos said. "Yeah, it’s pretty much everything I’ve ever wanted." Krystal Lang, another TikTok creator with over 50,000 followers, has also turned her hobby into a full-time career. Her content, centered on book recommendations, allowed her to build relationships with publishers and transition away from her day job. “I was able to build relationships with publishers and book brands through that following,” Lang said. “So it’s really disheartening to know that the community that I built on there is most likely going to go away.” Lang noted that while she has audiences on other platforms, TikTok’s unique format and algorithm made earning a living far easier. “Try to build those same numbers on YouTube and Instagram, I think, is going to be my primary focus. Just trying to get creative and find ways to fill that stream of income I’m going to be losing,” she said. TikTok’s possible shutdown has ignited a nationwide conversation, with creators and users alike grappling with what comes next. Those who depend on the app for income are now scrambling to secure their content and find alternative platforms to sustain their careers. TikTok users can download their personal data -- including followers, the accounts they follow and links to their content -- before the app goes dark.
