SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AUGUSTANA) -– The Augustana hockey team (13-7-2, 5-3 CCHA) tied Lindenwood (5-17-2) on Saturday night inside Midco Arena by a score of 1-1. Augustana secured the exhibition shootout with goals from Owen Bohn and Nace Langus.
In a back and forth first period of play, Lindenwood found early momentum and forced Josh Kotai to make big saves on breakaway and two-on-one opportunities. Augustana titled the ice in its favor as it forced Lindenwood to lock up defensively. Both teams were unsucessful on their power play opportunities with shots sitting at 12-12 by the buzzer.
Play continued into the second period as both teams looked to gain momentum in their respective zones. Augustana caught a break 7:06 into the frame as Langus glided into the zone and controlled the puck past a Lindenwood defender to find Meerman's skate that opened up a lane for Will Svenddal to fire in his first career goal and give Augustana a one-goal lead. Svenddal's goal boosted offensive pressure for the Vikings who outshot the Lions 13-6 in the period.
Lindenwood answered back quickly in the third period as it tied the game 2:42 into play off a goal from Ty Lipkin. Lipkin's game-tying goal tilted momentum in LU's favor but Kotai continued to stay strong between the pipes. A late power play opportunity with 1:15 remaining in the game gave Augustana a chance on the man advantage but Owen Bartoszkiewicz's strong play forced overtime.
Augustana was hit with a two-minute minor to start overtime as Luke Mobley was hit with a cross checking at the end of the third period. After both team's successfully killed off their penalties, play shifted to three-on-three. Augustana and Lindenwood garnered respective chances on offense but the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
In an exhibition shootout, Bohn and Langus found the back of the net and Kotai turned away two of three shooters to send the Viking fans home happy.
