(KSNW) — The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said a suspect is dead after a domestic violence incident. The situation escalated into a standoff lasting more than seven hours. It happened in the 8400 block of S. Minnesota Circle near Haysville. On Thursday, shortly before 4:30 p.m., the sheriff's office said that deputies were dispatched to the home after receiving a report of a domestic violence incident involving a handgun. The report stated that a 79-year-old man had threatened his 47-year-old son with a handgun. Witnesses say the father pointed a firearm at his son during an argument over money and threatened to kill him. The father was then locked out of the home, but he reportedly threatened to shoot through the door to regain entry. The father was allowed back inside before deputies arrived. When the deputies got to the home, they secured the area and evacuated other occupants. Despite several attempts, the suspect refused to surrender. By Friday evening, the Wichita/Sedgwick County SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were deployed to negotiate with the suspect. Negotiations began at about 10:30 p.m., but he refused to surrender. And even after chemical munitions were introduced, the sheriff's office said a peaceful resolution was unsuccessful. Shortly before 6 a.m., after more than seven and a half hours into the standoff, SWAT members entered the home, finding the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The sheriff's office said that currently, there is no threat to the public, and deputies will remain on the scene to complete their investigation. "The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during this challenging situation," said the sheriff's office in a news release. Additional details will be provided as they become available.
