Xaivian Lee continues to amaze. Lee matched a career-best 33 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with six seconds left, and Princeton escaped with an 81-80 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H. Lee’s trey capped off a wild sequence and gave the Tigers (13-4, 2-0) a sixth straight victory. He reached 30 points for the second time this season and fourth time in his career, also equaling his previous high of 33, which came against Harvard in the Ivy opener last season. The junior point guard was 12-of-19 from the floor, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and made 6-of-7 free throws. He also grabbed eight rebounds and dished three assists in 38 minutes. Before he was the hero, Lee was nearly the goat. With Princeton leading, 78-77, Lee slipped down as he was trapped and turned the ball over, which led to a transition 3-pointer for Cade Haskins that put the Big Green on top, 80-78, with 15.3 seconds left. Lee then pushed the ball up the court and again lost his footing while out of control, but was fortunate that the possession arrow was in the Tigers’ favor. This time coach Mitch Henderson took a timeout and Lee worked his magic. He got the 6-6 Jayden Williams switched on to him and backed Williams off just enough to get into his signature step-back 3-pointer. Dartmouth raced up the floor in search of a buzzer beater, but Romeo Myrthil stumbled and traveled trying to catch the ball. It was Princeton’s latest great escape from Leede Arena. Prior to a loss there in the Sweet 16 season, the previous three meetings — all Tiger wins — were decided by four points or less. Caden Pierce racked up a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds and Dalen Davis scored 11 for Princeton. Ryan Cornish, who had his career high 31 points against the Tigers two seasons ago, led Dartmouth (7-8, 1-1) with 20 points. Brandon Mitchell-Day finished with 16 points and nine rebounds and Haskins netted 12 off the bench. Princeton returns home on Monday for an afternoon matinee against Columbia. The Lions (11-4, 0-2) lost to Yale, 92-88, on Saturday.
