PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Health said the first confirmed case of measles in the state since 2013 has been identified. The department said the case was found in a “young, unvaccinated child with a recent history of international travel.” The child was hospitalized at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in early January and is now “at home and well.” RIDOH added that the child had no school or daycare contacts and the risk to the public is considered low, with contact tracing being performed. The department added that the measles, mumps, and rubella, or MMR, vaccine is the best way to prevent infection. Symptoms of measles include: High fever Cough Runny nose Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis) Tiny white spots inside the mouth on the inner lining of the cheek A rash made up of large, flat blotches. The department added that infected people can spread measles to others from four days before to four days after the rash appears. Categories: News, Rhode Island
