Arctic air lurks ahead, watching for midweek winter storm
Jan 18, 2025
Some meager peeks of sunshine have returned this Saturday afternoon after a soggy start to the weekend. Overnight lows will only bottom out in the mid-40s for most communities across the Piedmont and Foothills as mostly cloudy skies and patchy fog keep us insulated. A few shower chances will linger through the early afternoon on Sunday before the remaining moisture clears out to the northeast. Buoyed by a relatively warm start to the day, temperatures will climb well into the 50s around the Metro to close out the weekend.
Enjoy the seasonable warmth this weekend while it lasts. Arctic air pours into the Carolinas from the northwest as a cold front flushes out the rain. Northwesterly flow could quickly rack up 1-3″ of snow with locally higher amounts possible in the High Country through Tuesday morning. While we won’t see any snow in the Queen City to start the workweek, we will see some brutally cold air. Lows will drop like a rock into the teens and single digits across the board beginning Sunday night. Highs will struggle to get above freezing (32º) for much of the week ahead – and an incoming storm system by Tuesday evening could make things even more interesting.
Medium-range models have shown a strong signal for roughly a week suggesting a winter storm will run through the Deep South and Southeast between Monday and Wednesday. With cold air well established by the time the system reaches the Carolinas, this will likely be a mostly snow event for anyone who sees moisture. The big “if” for the WCCB Charlotte viewing area is whether or not we get in on said moisture. After a brief trend to the northwest yesterday, models are pushing this system back to the southeast, which may keep many areas around the Metro and northwestward dry. Believe it or not, areas like Wilmington and Rockingham have a significantly better chance of accumulating snow compared to Charlotte.
If snow were to arrive in the Queen City, it would likely fall between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Generally speaking, the farther southeast one goes, the better your snow chances get. Regardless of whether or not we see any wintry weather, dangerous cold sticks around through at least Thursday night. Make sure your heaters are functioning well – they’ll be under substantial stress over the coming week.
