8 foods that can boost your happiness in the new year
Jan 18, 2025
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — In the new year, people usually write down what they want to accomplish, including things that would make them happy.
Diets aren't usually something that falls into the happiness category, but what we eat plays a role in how we feel.
Studies have linked nutrition and mental well-being, and certain foods have been associated with a boost of serotonin (the happy hormone).
Here are eight foods that will boost your serotonin levels and make you happier.
Dark chocolate can positively affect a person's mood due to three main components: tryptophan, theobromine, and phenylethylalanine. Tryptophan is an amino acid that produces serotonin. Theobromine is a stimulant that can improve moods. Phenylethylalanine is an amino acid that produces dopamine (a natural antidepressant).
Bananas contain serotonin, although it's unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. But bananas play a role in regulating moods in an indirect way with vitamin B6 (which creates serotonin).
Coconuts are loaded with medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), which boost energy levels. It's also found that MCTs from coconut milk can help reduce anxiety, but more research is needed to completely prove that.

Coffee, in moderation, can be justified because a meta-analysis concluded that consumption is associated with a decreased risk of depression.
Avocados are packed with nutrients including choline, which is used to regulate the nervous system and mood, and vitamin B, which can lower stress levels. Plus, healthy fats (which are found in avocados) are proven to reduce anxiety in women.
Berries are rich in antioxidants that can reduce depression symptoms, and blueberries specifically were found to be linked to a slower cognitive decline that's associated with aging. Fruits and vegetables in general were found to improve mental health.
Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, kombucha, and yogurt can maintain a healthy gut and improve moods, as the fermentation process creates probiotics.
Mushrooms are full of vitamin D, which is linked to antidepressant qualities.
While your first instinct when you don't feel your best might be to reach for cookies, these eight foods can give you more satisfaction while also improving your mood and mental health in the long run.
