TikTok to go dark on Sunday in latest update
Jan 18, 2025
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The social media app TikTok confirmed that it plans to go dark in the United States on Sunday unless it's given more clarity from the Biden administration.
We're just one day away from TikTok's supposed shutdown, which is coming right before President-elect Donald Trump transitions into the White House.
Supreme Court upholds nationwide TikTok ban
In a post on X on Saturday, the app announced that statements issued by the Biden administration had failed to provide the necessary clarity to maintain TikTok's availability to more than 170 million American users.
They said, "Unless the Biden administration immediately provides a definitive statement...assuring non-enforcement...unfortunately, TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19."
This comes after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the federal law banning the popular social media app starting Sunday unless it is sold by its China-based parent company ByteDance. A sale does not appear imminent at this time, meaning new users won't be able to download the app and updates won't be available. However, it won't disappear from users' phones.
Trump has vowed that he could negotiate a solution, and President Joe Biden has signaled he will not enforce the law on Sunday, his final full day in office.
Trump may use an executive order to delay the ban by as much as 270 days, which would give ByteDance nine months to sell the app.
