After a chilly and bright week across Hampton Roads, we'll deal with more clouds, chances for rainfall and a bump up in our temperatures for the weekend. The two weak systems that slide through the region today and tomorrow will the unlock some of the coldest air we've seen in about two years.... buckle up and bundle up! The first system slides through the region today -- we only expect a few passing showers between late morning and early afternoon. High temperatures will slowly rebound to the low 50s for most of town, especially when we carve some sunshine out by the late day hours. Sunday looks a bit different as it should be cloudier and gloomier as the second system pops overtop of us. Throughout the day a weak area of low pressure develops to keep clouds around for most of the day, and set up scattered light rainfall or some mist/drizzle. Temperatures will be a bit split, too, with 30s & 40s across most of SE VA, and 40s to low 50s possible across NE NC. It's even possible that a brief wintry mix blends in to parts of town on the Peninsulas and the Eastern Shore -- sometime at the end of the day or towards the evening when that colder air comes in on the backside of this second system. Beyond this weekend, the arctic air coming in next week will be the big headline... we'll have a stretch of two to three days where temperatures won't get above freezing! The last time we had high temperatures in the 20s was back on Christmas Eve in 2022 -- that could be the case for two or three days in a row early next week. The arctic air crashes in Sunday night and sets up a very cold MLK Day Monday -- high temperatures will be around 30° with a cold northerly breeze, so wind chills will probably be in the 20s most of the afternoon. By Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning, and even Thursday morning, our low temperatures will then plummet to the teens (with inland locations potentially reaching single digits). Highs should stay around 32° or below through Wednesday. Take precautions around home to brace for that length of cold -- drip faucets along exterior walls, open up cabinets underneath sinks, bring in your pets and check in on your neighbors. Again, it's been 756 days since we've seen it this cold! Also, remind your kiddos to stay away from any ice or frozen over creeks/ponds. But, wait... there's more! Not only will we battle the bitter cold for a few days next week, another chance for snowfall across the region is possible around midweek. Some moisture may race by to our south between Tuesday and Wednesday, grazing the cold air that'll be locked in. We could see snow develop across parts of the region later on Tuesday into Wednesday -- but snow amounts and specifics are heavily dependent on the storm track & speed. Check back in throughout the weekend for more specifics as we monitor next week's system, and bundle up for the big time cold! -Steve
