HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — You think you've seen cold — just wait. Hampton Roads is expected to see a huge dip in temperatures coming up early next week. The best advice? Stay indoors if you can, especially if you’re more susceptible to the cold. Temperatures could be dangerous for those like the elderly or the immunocompromised, as this is the coldest January we've seen in the last four or five years. “So far, we've only had two days with highs 50 or above," Super Doppler 10 Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler said Friday. "And you can see how that compares to other years." That cold streak will continue next week, as highs are below freezing as an arctic blast is expected. “We'll have a mild day coming in for Saturday. But then the jet stream is going to take this huge dip over the country and it's going to get as far south as, probably as Florida and Georgia going into Monday and we're going to be in the middle of that. So, that cold air is just rushing in from Canada. Actually, I think the origin is Siberia."And you'll be wanting to dress like you're in Siberia if you plan to attend MLK celebrations Monday, as this will be some of the coldest air we've had in several years."The temperature will top off at 30 degrees," Wheeler said. "It'll be in the 20s most of the day. Wind chills will be in the teens and 20s and is probably going to be windy. Now, that may change a bit, but it's going to be really tough to have those outdoor events." If you have outdoor plans, layers are the key — scarves, hats, gloves, socks and even face masks."A lot of times we lose our body heat through our faces, our necks, our hands, our wrists and also our ankles, so those are things you want to cover up,” Wheeler said. And stay out of the wind if possible. You’ll also want to wrap any outdoor pipes, drip your faucets and put towels under door frames that let in a draft.
