Tracking a wintry mix Saturday morning; temperatures plunge early in the week
Jan 18, 2025
Rain showers are turning over to a wet snow for several locations across central Indiana this Saturday morning. Roads are primarily wet at 8 AM, but when the snow begins to stick it could produce slick road conditions, especially north-northeast of Indianapolis.
The wintry mix will impact the area through midday, then exit early in the afternoon. Minor, slushy snow accumulations are possible. Half inch or less of snow looks possible for the northeastern quadrant of the area, which includes Anderson, Muncie and Tipton.
Skies will remain cloudy through the afternoon with a chance for lingering flurries. Once the surface cold front passes over central Indiana, temperatures will slowly fall through the afternoon. Temperatures should drop near the freezing mark around 4 PM.
On Sunday, there is another chance for light snow showers, which may bring a half inch or less of snowfall to spots. The bigger story for Sunday will be the plunging temperatures! It is going to turn much colder throughout the day Sunday as arctic air builds into the Midwest.
An Extreme Cold Weather Watch has been issued for most of central Indiana late Sunday through Monday afternoon. Air temperatures will tumble below zero early Monday morning with the potential for wind chill values down to -25°!
The bitter weather hangs around through Wednesday morning with more opportunities to see sub-zero lows. During this time, it is important to limit your time outside and find ways to stay warm. Listen to your body if you must be outside for long periods of time, and lookout for symptoms of frost bite and hypothermia. Temperatures should begin to recover midweek with highs back into the 30s by Thursday.
