ExAntioch police officer Eric Rombough pleads guilty

(KRON) -- A former Antioch Police Department officer who allegedly collected "trophies" from crime scenes to display on his home mantle pleaded guilty this week as part of a plea deal.
Ex-APD police officer Eric Rombough pleaded guilty to conspiracy and deprivation of rights under color of law, federal court documents state.
Rombough was one of 10 current and former Antioch and Pittsburg police officers who were simultaneously arrested in an FBI raid during the summer of 2023. Rombough and two of his fellow APD officers -- Morteza Amiri, and Devon Christopher Wenger -- were accused of committing "a disturbing litany of civil rights violations" and using excessive force, U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey said.
Rombough changed his plea from "not guilty" to "guilty" on January 14 to avoid an upcoming trial beginning in early March. His co-defendants, Wenger and Amiri, will stand trial.
Amiri a former K-9 unit officer, Rombough, a former SWAT team member, and Wenger, a patrol officer, used their private cellphones to exchange text messages bragging about using excessive force against suspects while making arrests, according to a federal grand jury indictment.
They collected "mementos … from their attacks on the people of Antioch," Ramsey said. "Rombough collected the spent 40mm munitions following each deployment and, instead of disposing or processing them, kept them for himself. (He created) a trophy flag … in which the munitions were used among the stars and stripes to commemorate his 40mm deployments," the indictment writes.

Before Rombough became a police officer, he was a professional soccer player. He bragged about kicking the head of a young Black man like he was scoring a goal, court documents state.
Even in cases when suspects immediately and peacefully surrendered, Rombough shot suspects with less-lethal 44mm munitions and Amiri deployed his K-9, according to the indictment. In their police reports, the officers untruthfully wrote that the suspects had resisted arrest, investigators said.

A sweeping investigation into ADP was conducted by the FBI and Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. In court documents filed by CCCDAO, racists text messages exchanged between several officers were revealed.
Rombough wrote a text message dated March 25, 2021, "Sooo many black people." Another officer replied, "Bro. They all look the same." Rombough replied back, "Tell me about it. I feel like I’m at the zoo," according to the DA's report.
In a text dated Nov. 22, 2021, Rombough wrote, "I’m only stopping them cuz they black." On January 24, 2022 he wrote, "Bottom line it doesn’t matter some gorilla killed another gorilla," according to the DA's report.
Rombough joined the Antioch Police Department in early 2017 and he left the force after FBI agents arrested him in 2023.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Rombough on April 22, when a judge will determine his punishment.
