TOPEKA (KSNT) - 27 News has continued to hear from many northeast Kansas residents for weeks mail not being delivered. We are now learning more answers to what is causing this delay. According to a Topeka Letter Carrier Union spokesman, the winter storm is a huge part of the problem. Mail carriers have been working longer days. What usually is an eight-hour workday has now turned to a three-times larger workload. That winter storm brought in harsh blizzard conditions beginning on January 4. For many areas across northeast Kansas, it took days to push away all the snow. Some snow drifts made it impossible for mail carriers to complete deliveries. On January 9, post offices were closed for a day of remembrance to former President Jimmy Carter. Northeast Kansas farm agrees to $70,000 settlement with EPA over alleged water pollution A union spokesman says all of this pushed back days of mail from being delivered. As of the week of Jan. 13, mail carriers are trying to get caught up and hope to get back on track soon. To ensure they keep catching up with their services, carriers ask for the public to continue salting sidewalks, cleaning off steps, and shoveling off pathways to mailboxes. A union spokesman says despite all the obstacles they as carriers have encountered, all of the bits have helped more than the public has realized in helping their delivery be more efficient even in bad weather and they thank the public for looking out for their safety.  For more local news, click here.
