NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – It has been a warm and windy afternoon for New Mexico. The temperatures may be cooling off but the wind will be sticking around for tomorrow. Upper-level flow has been increasing over southeastern New Mexico this afternoon. This has resulted in strong wind gusts across the region. Gusts have currently peaked between 40-50 mph. However, they could still increase to 65 mph. Due to this, the National Weather Service has issued several alerts for the area. The wind advisories will be in place until 6 p.m. January 17th. The High Wind Warnings will be in place until 10 p.m. January 17th. Additionally, the strong winds are causing blowing dust across southeastern New Mexico. A low-pressure system will be diving into northern New Mexico tomorrow. This low will be bringing light snowfall to the northern and northeastern throughout the day on Saturday. The snowfall will start very early Saturday morning around Raton. The snow will migrate south towards Tucumcari through the afternoon. This very cold air mass will be cooling off temperatures across the state on Saturday. Accompanying this arctic air will also be a backdoor cold front across northeastern and eastern New Mexico. Snowfall on Sunday will be light in the morning across northeastern New Mexico. On Monday, round two of snowfall moves into the state. This snowfall will be comparable to the snowfall seen on Saturday. However, it will be slightly more widespread. The highest forecast confidence for snow on Monday is in the northeast. Snowfall in central New Mexico has a lower forecast confidence. Certain models are forecasting a light dusting over the area on Monday. Whereas other models have the region staying dry. Also on Monday, the second blast of arctic air will move into the state. This will be the coldest air we have seen so far this winter. It will be bringing bitterly cold weather through the middle of next week. The coldest temperatures are forecasted for Tuesday. The day will begin well below freezing for everyone in New Mexico. The day is forecasted to warm up to slightly through the afternoon. However, the wind chill will keep the entire state feeling like it is below freezing.
