LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) — A Lincoln woman will get a very special gift for her 85th birthday: a trip to Washington D.C. for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Dorothy White said she has lived a full life, but still had one big wish for her birthday on Jan. 20.
“My biggest thrill would be to go to the inauguration,” she said.
A mother of four, White said she had nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
She said her son Tim was all-in on the idea to go to the capital, and she reached out to Town Administrator Phil Gould to make her dream a reality.
“Her enthusiasm was something special, so I wanted to do whatever I could to help her out,” Gould said. “I had to explain to her we had to be realistic, that I’ll do what I can; I just wasn’t sure how available tickets would be and if I could get my hands on them.”
Days later Gould got a call from Sen. Jack Reed’s office to tell him White would get her tickets.
“When I told her the news she almost jumped through the phone,” he said.
Her son said she called him crying tears of joy, but there was still one surprise left: tickets to the inaugural ball and a chance to meet the President-elect.
“All I would want to do is shake his hand and say ‘I’m so happy that you won and I believe in you,'” White said.
Her grandson Riley will be joining her and her son on the trip.
“So now we are three generations going and we all love Donald [Trump],” she said.
Even with the forecasted cold temperatures forcing the event inside, Gould said he was confident White would be able to fulfill her dream.
“I don’t think anybody is gonna keep her from that inauguration,” he said.
