Rainy Saturday afternoon, snowy Sunday afternoon and night
Jan 17, 2025
Saturday will start off with clouds taking over, but afternoon highs will be very mild for this time of year, in the mid 40s. However, there’s not much time to enjoy the pleasantly mild air, as rain moves in Saturday afternoon around 3 PM. We’ll start with lighter showers, then progress to heavier rain around the dinner hours and then quickly exiting between 9-10 PM.
Sunday morning may start off with just a little bit of sun very early, but clouds will again take over. Highs will climb to the upper 30s before our next storm arrives with snow developing as early as 3 PM. As we get past 4-5 PM temperatures will be getting colder and the snow will begin to accumulate!
It looks like height of the storm will be occurring between 8 PM and Midnight Sunday with snowfall rates likely reaching 0.5-1″ per hour at times. After Midnight, the snows let up and everything looks to be ending by daybreak Monday morning leaving us with snow totals on the order of 3-6″ throughout RI, except for the south coast to New Bedford and on to the Cape where a little bit of mixing may occur at the onset and keep the numbers down into the 2-3 inch range. However, as more hi-resolution model guidance becomes available throughout the day Saturday the timing and intensity may change along with resulting snow totals.
Then, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, much colder air begins to settle in as partial sunshine returns with highs only in the mid 20s. If that isn’t cold enough get ready for an Arctic blast Tuesday and Wednesday with ineffective sunshine. Highs will only be in the teens and morning lows will be in the single digits with wind chills making it feel as cold as 5-15 degrees BELOW ZERO!
