Shamar Duncan found guilty for murder of Royal Netherlands Army soldier
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The man accused of killing a Netherlands soldier and hurting two others in 2022 was found guilty on Friday.
Shamar Duncan was convicted of murder after a five-day trial.
Duncan shot three Royal Netherlands Army soldiers outside the Hampton Inn Indianapolis Downtown, 105 S. Meridian St., in August 2022. One soldier, 26-year-old Simmie Poetsema, died days after the shooting.
Duncan was 22 at the time of the murder.
Online court records do not show when Duncan will be sentenced.
News 8 previously reported the soldiers had been in Indiana for training.
Poetsema and a group of people were visiting downtown Indy when the soldiers had an altercation with Duncan and his friends in the early morning of Aug. 27, 2022.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Marshals Service investigated the case.
Statement
“The Poetsema family, his fellow soldiers, and the surviving victims have continued to show such grace in the face of unimaginable grief under extraordinary circumstances. Indianapolis is a world-class city, and we will not be defined by the defendant’s actions, but rather by our city’s response in the face of tragedy. It’s through that sense of collaboration and community that we were able to secure justice for Simmie.”
