The coach of Molokai's Napua o Hina volleyball team was a bit worried for his girls' travel plans when Mokulele Airlines voluntarily grounded all its Hawaii flights on Wednesday, Jan. 15. "Of course, we went crazy at the beginning, but we had to keep it cool. We stressed that to our kids every day about handling, you know, challenges and obstacles and you just got to be ready for it," Bill Dudoit said. Message to Hawaii delegation amid Mokulele grounding: ‘Step up, work with us’ The tournament starts on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Hawaii Convention Center, which gave the club just enough time to get in touch with boat captain Tim Forsberg. They left Molokai around 6 a.m. on Friday. "Fabulous weather. If it would have been bad weather, we couldn't have done it, but it, but it was just a fabulous boat ride. We got here in three hours so it wasn't bad at all," Forsberg said. The coach and captain said Mokulele's grounding is a huge burden on their entire community even though the players enjoyed the ride. Mokulele flights grounded "Especially our kupuna or people who need medical attention, they need it. I mean, it's, it's a struggle," Dudoit said. "I think they could have done it in a better, much better manner. I understand the safety concerns and all that, but it's been a real disservice for people. It's really a black eye on Mokulele," Forsberg said. Even Congresswoman Jill Tokuda took notice of the issue and questions whether Mokulele should continue to solely rely on Cessna aircraft for its Hawaii fleet. Tokuda said.
