Extreme Cold Watch in effect late Sunday night through Wednesday morning along and west of the Blue Ridge. Temperatures may drop below zero with wind chills as long as 15 below zero. Weekend Rain: Saturday AM then Sunday: A low pressure will move across the area bringing widespread rain to the area Saturday morning. A wintry mix is likely in the mountains. It is possible the wintry mix dives south along and north of I-40, but the confidence in this is still low. On Sunday, the rain coverage will not be as high – widely scattered. Arctic Air: Sunday PM through mid-week next week: An Arctic airmass will spill across the area Sunday. Overnight low temperatures on Monday morning will be below zero across some mountains communities with teens for some in the piedmont. Possible Wintry Weather: Tuesday – Wednesday: We are watching for the possibility of more winter weather midweek next week. The cold air will be in place, now we need to lock in moisture — this all depends where an area of low pressure tracks. Scenario 1: The low pressure in the Gulf dives south which means no moisture for us Scenario 2: If the low tracks closer to the coast, we may see snow Forecast: Tonight: Partly cloudy. Increasing clouds. Lows in the upper 30s. Saturday: Widespread rain through the morning. Mountain mix. Possible wintry mix along and north of I-40. Highs in the low 50s. Sunday: Widely scattered showers. Highs near 50. WeatherWise Alert Monday: Waking up to temperature near zero in the mountains and in the teens across the piedmont. Highs will stay near or below freezing all day. Have a great weekend! Kaitlin
