BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — On Friday, hunters showed up at the state capitol in blaze orange to urge legislators to support a new bill. They're talking about Senate Bill 2137, which would allow landowners and hunters to use supplemental feed on private property for big game hunting. Supplemental feed is also known as baiting, and currently, the North Dakota Game and Fish department does not allow hunting over bait in certain units where chronic wasting disease is a concern. Senator Keith Boehm, who wrote the bill, says the concern isn't with chronic wasting disease, but instead with EHD and recent harsh winters, which have more directly hurt the deer population. Cattle hauler crashes near Valley City, calves killed, one missing "One confirmed deer in North Dakota has died from chronic wasting disease," Sen. Boehm said. "If these numbers were for my cow herd, I'm not sure I would be concerned, as disease in mammals at that rate do not deserve much attention." "Prolonged and repeated exposure infects deer. That's why we're here today," said Brock Wahl, who's with the group, North Dakota Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. "That's what we're talking about. That's why we're concerned about this. It took over a year of exposure to start getting positive deer." Two years ago, state lawmakers tried passing a similar bill restricting the Game and Fish from banning using bait on private land. That bill was voted down in the senate. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Today's Top Stories SIGN UP NOW
