A Gervais man is accused of driving drunk, fatally striking a man walking in northeast Salem and dragging him for several blocks before fleeing Thursday night.
The Salem Police Department Friday afternoon identified the victim as Brian D. Coulson, 55, of Salem.
The driver, Sergio Reyes Aguilar, 35, was charged on Friday in Marion County Circuit Court with second-degree manslaughter, failure to perform duties of driver, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and driving while under the influence of intoxicants.
Officers responded around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday to a report that a man was injured on the road in the 2000 block of Northeast Lancaster Drive. Paramedics performed lifesaving measures but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Saem police said in a news release.
The agency’s traffic team determined that the driver was headed south on Lancaster, south of Northeast Beverly Avenue, when he struck the victim.
“The driver continued southbound with the victim separating from the vehicle after several blocks. The driver did not stop and left the area,” according to the police statement.
Court records described Coulson as transient.
Around 50 minutes later at 12:20 a.m., officers found the driver and vehicle involved in the crash in the area of Northeast Cordon and Silverton Roads, police said. They identified the driver as Reyes Aguilar.
Reyes Aguilar was arrested and lodged at the Marion County Jail, where he was being held on $500,000 bail as of Friday afternoon, according to the jail’s roster.
The charges allege that he drove while under the influence of alcohol.
Reyes Aguilar has criminal convictions in Marion and Polk counties dating back to 2008, including for second-degree robbery, third-degree assault and most recently in 2020 for possessing a firearm as a felon, for which he was sentenced to two and a half years in state prison.
Police closed the southbound lanes of Lancaster between Northeast Beverly Avenue and Northeast Sunnyview Road for around five hours while they investigated the crash.
