PHILADELPHIA — After the Eagles lost inside linebacker Nakobe Dean to a torn patellar tendon in the wild-card round, attention quickly turned to Oren Burks to replace him in this Sunday’s divisional playoff game against the Rams. Burks filled in for him the rest of the way against Green Bay and started in Week 17 against Dallas, but rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr. will also see action this week. It was Trotter who recovered Burks’ forced fumble on the opening kickoff against the Packers, as both players have already been active on special teams. “We’ll probably get Trot (on the field),” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “We’re not afraid to put him in there. I think Trot’s got a good future, and that future may be now. He’s got good instincts. Really likes the game. He’s smart. He’s got a lot of good qualities.” Trotter’s linebacker father — the “Axe Man” — played eight years here and is in the Eagles Hall of Fame. Junior was rated the No. 1 high school linebacker in the country coming out of St. Joseph’s Prep, where his program won back-to-back 6A state championships and was ranked third nationally. He went on to have a standout career at Clemson before the Eagles drafted him 155th overall last year. “I definitely feel like I’m ready,” Trotter said. “I prepared every single week like I was going to start. I try to make sure I’m always on top of whatever I need to do as far as mentally and preparation-wise. I just try to look up to the veterans to see how they prepare as well. That’s all you can really do. I just have full faith in God, that he’ll be with me and guide me on the field.” He added that playing in the regular-season finale against the Giants, when most Birds starters were resting, provided valuable experience. “Those reps helped out a lot,” Trotter said. “In practice, I was getting some reps and doing what I could to make sure I was getting better and working on my craft, but getting real game reps definitely helps, especially learning from the veterans all season. I’m preparing to make the most of every opportunity that I get, and if I get in there, I need to do my job to help the team win.” Now, Trotter is getting practice reps next to All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun — who will wear the green dot (a wired sticker/headset) to relay defensive plays, which usually was Dean’s job. “Zack took me under his wing and has been teaching me everything he’s learned and being a great veteran guy, I really appreciate him and I appreciate the whole linebacker room, the older guys in the room,” Trotter said. “I’m just trying to soak it all in and try to learn from them and gain knowledge.” Baun is looking forward to seeing Trotter in the middle of the field on gameday. “Trot is definitely ready,” Baun said. “I know because I’m practicing with him, I’m playing with him. Yeah, he’s been ready for a long time now. He’s really excited and I’m excited for him and Oren.” Burks spent four years in Green Bay and two in San Francisco before signing a one-year contract with the Eagles last spring. He has started 17 games in his career and appeared in 108. He has played 147 snaps this year. “Even though we haven’t played a lot this season because Nakobe and Zack have done such a great job, we’ve taken mental reps,” Burks said. “We’ve stayed sharp. It’s tough to see Nakobe go down. He was playing great football. But the mentality you have to have is that it’s next man up, and we’re the next men.”
