EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP)-- The City of Easthampton is preparing for next week's expected extreme cold by planning to provide warming centers in the community. Amherst providing warming shelters for next week Easthampton is one of many communities planning to care for unhoused persons who may be in need of warm shelter. Currently they are suggesting people utilize the Easthampton Public Safety Complex at 32 Payson Avenue. Days and hours are: Monday, January 20, 2025: Public Safety Complex- 8AM to 4 PM. Tuesday, January 21, 2025: Public Safety Complex and Easthampton Council on Aging (19 Union Street) open from 8 AM to 4 PM. Wednesday, January 22, 2025: Public Safety Complex and Easthampton Council on Aging open from 8 AM to 4 PM. The City wants residents to know that the Easthampton Public Safety Complex will always be available for anyone as a warming center outside of the posted hours. They will be opening more warming centers over the next few days. The City offers these suggestions to keep safe:● Dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing instead of a single heavylayer. Outer garments should be tightly woven and water-repellent. Wear a hat,mittens (not gloves), and sturdy waterproof boots to protect your arms, legs, hands,and feet. Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs.● Make sure to not leave your pets outside for long periods of time● If your pipes freeze, open all faucets all the way, remove any insulation, and heat thefrozen pipe with a hair dryer or wrap it with towels soaked in hot water. Never use anopen flame to thaw pipes.● Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly,those who live alone, those with medical conditions, and those who may need extra.● Make sure emergency generators or secondary heating systems are well-ventilated.
