Springfield Police urge drivers to avoid leaving cars running unattended

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield Police Department's Auto-Theft unit is reminding drivers to take precautions to prevent auto thefts, particularly as colder weather tempts many to leave their cars unattended.
According to the Springfield Police Department, the city saw approximately 50 vehicles stolen last February after being left running or with keys inside. These crimes, often described as "crimes of opportunity," are preventable with simple safety measures.
“Warming up your car while grabbing a coffee might seem harmless, but it only takes seconds for a thief to steal your vehicle,” said the department in a statement posted to social media. The SPD has reported thefts from both residential driveways and business parking lots.
Tips to prevent auto theft:
Never leave your car running unattended
Roll up windows, lock doors, and take your keys or key fob with you
Park in well-lit areas
Avoid leaving valuables in plain sight or in your car at all
Consider using a steering wheel or wheel-locking device
In the event of a theft, the police advise victims to immediately report the crime and notify their insurance company. As the department continues to combat auto thefts, officials hope these reminders will encourage Springfield residents to take simple steps to protect their vehicles.
