Remember a few weeks back on December 27, when Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama was involved in one of the most heartwarming jersey exchanges we’ve ever seen? As a refresher, they had just beaten the Brooklyn Nets (in Brooklyn), and after the game, Wemby gave his jersey to a young fan in exchange for his tiny jersey. It was an adorable moment that quickly went viral. A few weeks ago, Victor Wembanyama delivered one of the BEST jersey swaps we’ve seen with a young fan that went viral across social media. It was just announced today, however, the jersey is already up for auction at Goldin. What are your thoughts on this? pic.twitter.com/hqHspq3dFP— The Collectibles Guru (@ericwhiteback) January 15, 2025 There have been plenty of reactions to this news, ranging from criticism of the child’s parents for not letting him keep the gift or possibly even using him for exploitation, to more sympathetic views (it’s their business what they do with it, we don’t know about their financial situation, this happens all the time, etc.). There have also been suggestions that even if you agree with them selling it, they’re acting too soon since it could be worth much more in just a few years, once Wemby has more awards (and possibly championships) on his resume. But perhaps most importantly, Wemby himself didn’t seem too pleased, as he reacted to the news on X with a crying emoji — his only tweet this season outside of his invitation to fans to come play chess with him in New York the day after that same Nets game. https://t.co/b7jQHgiPLc— Wemby (@wemby) January 15, 2025 My opinion of this situation is somewhat mixed. I understand all too well that families can fall on hard financial times, and sometimes you have to let go of prized possessions to get by, but there’s still some questions left unanswered. If that is the case, how did they afford courtside seats? The answer could be as simple as they were seated higher up, and his sign was spotted by staff, but let’s talk about that sign. It reads “Victor Wembanyama, will you please swap jerseys with me,” so clearly this was the plan all along. It was also clearly created by an adult. (Which, sure, he may have wanted to make it and needed help, but the details are so fine that it doesn’t look like he had any part in decorating it.) Finally, the kid is very young and wasn’t exactly acting star stuck to meet his supposed favorite player like most kids are. If anything, in hindsight he seemed a little uncomfortable. Is it possible his parents put him up to the task for this exact reason, even if it came from a place of need? There’s no telling, but I’m not one to judge. All I care about is that it doesn’t prevent Wemby from committing such acts of kindness going forward. Giving away memorabilia after nearly every game has become a point of emphasis for him, to the point that the Spurs staff have even admitted they always have plenty of extra jerseys on hand for him. Odds are 95% of the fans he gives gifts to will keep and cherish their treasure, so keep being you, Wemby. Don’t let this one instance change that.
