The set change is continuing in Park City in the days before the opening of the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday. And as is the case each year, the municipal government is readying for the cast to arrive.City Hall is well into the preparations for the festival and the effort will accelerate through the weekend and into the workweek. Officials have started to temporarily close blocs of parking spots in the Main Street core. The closures are key to the municipal operations plan for Sundance, but they also remove certain spots even before the festival begins. The parking at Bob Wells Plaza along Swede Alley closed days ago as the Acura location, among the largest temporary installations during Sundance, is constructed. The parking there is not scheduled to reopen until Feb. 1. Parking in the northern part of the Brew Pub lot along upper Main Street is also already closed with a reopening date slated for Feb. 2.The schedule for the upcoming parking closures, as outlined by City Hall:The west side of Main Street: Jan. 21, Jan. 22 and Jan. 27-29. Park Avenue between the Heber Avenue and 9th Street intersections: Jan. 23-Feb. 2. The lot on the north side of the Marsac Building, which will involve a partial closure: Jan. 22-Feb. 2. The length of Main Street, Heber Avenue, Swede Alley and the Brew Pub lot, the west side of Park Avenue and and the flagpole lot: Jan. 23-29. There will be spots in the Brew Pub lot for drivers holding Americans With Disabilities Act placards. There will be allowances for resident parking on the impacted section of Park Avenue and the flagpole lot will be available to those holding employee parking permits.Parking on residential streets surrounding Old Town, meanwhile, is regulated through a permit system. The parking situation in the Old Town core has long been a festival challenge, particularly during the traditionally busy first weekend of Sundance. The crush of cars leaves drivers at many points circling in search of a parking spot.City Hall has outlined options for parking just off Main Street as well as in outlying locations. One of the options costs hundreds of dollars, while others are free. The municipal government is selling permits that guarantee a parking spot at the China Bridge garage, a block from Main Street, at a price of $550 and covering the period from Jan. 23 until Feb. 2. Drivers holding that category of permit will enter the garage from Swede Alley. Permits are available on the City Hall website, parkcity.org, or by contacting City Hall at 435-615-5301.There will be other options at China Bridge as well, with prices shifting throughout Sundance. There are no in-and-out privileges there. The price schedule at China Bridge, each a flat fee:Jan. 23: $40 Jan. 24 and Jan. 25: $50 Jan. 26-28: $30 Jan. 29-Feb. 2: Standard parking rates.Privately held garages in the area of Main Street are also available with varying prices. City Hall says daily prices range from $20 to more than $100.There is free parking available elsewhere in Park City during Sundance, but the locations require a bus ride or a walk to Main Street. The options include:The Richardson Flat park-and-ride lot along the S.R. 248 entryway. Free buses from the lot to Old Town run every 15 minutes between 6:40 a.m. and 2 a.m. Jan. 23-Feb. 1. Lots 5 and 6 at the Snow Park base of Deer Valley Resort from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. from Jan. 23 until Feb. 2. The Park City-side base of Park City Mountain, known as Mountain Village, from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. from Jan. 23 until Feb. 2.City Hall says vehicles left in the resort parking lots beyond 1 a.m. are subject to tow at the expense of the owner. Festival parking in the lots is prohibited other than the hours outlined. There will be free parking available at the Richardson Flat park-and-ride lot, located along the S.R. 248 entryway, during the Sundance Film Festival. Buses will shuttle people between the lot and Old Town.
