Local reaction to potential TikTok ban

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Supreme Court upheld the ban of TikTokon Friday, meaning the app will be banned on Jan. 19 if it is not sold by its parent company, or the White House steps in.
“Honestly I think it is kind of crazy that our government would even jump to these extremes,” Jacob Lovett of Providence said. “I think social media is kind of one of those things. It is just a public platform for people to share their thoughts.”
Experts said the app will not disappear from existing users’ phones once the law takes effect, but new users wont be able to download it and uploads will not be available, which will ultimately make the app unworkable.
“This is a free country, people should be able to do whatever they want,” Larry Smith of East Providence said.
More than 170 million Americans use Tikok, and for some, it’s how they make a living.
“For a lot of people who are big fans of the app and use it for their business especially they are in a bad spot, I hope it doesn’t take effect and they can keep their livelihoods,” Lovett said.
The Biden administration says it will be up to the Trump administration to enforce the law….
“It would make everything else on the internet a national security threat,” Smith said. “The most basic right is the right to be left alone; It seems like they’re trying to take our eyes off of what is really going on.”
TikTok’s CEO is scheduled to attend President-elect Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, and Trump’s team has told sources they are discussing options to try and save the app, a reversal from his 2020 promise to ban it.
