PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a fire broke out in a Pawtucket parking lot late Thursday night.
Pawtucket Detective Sergeant Theodore Georgitsis said first responders were called to the Chinese Christian Church just after 10:30 p.m. to investigate a wooden structure on fire in the parking lot.
Georgitsis said a 61-year-old homeless man was living in the structure and had ignited a cardboard box to use it as a fireplace.
The flames spread to the man's mattress and then to the wooden structure itself, as well as the nearby woods.
Georgitsis said a neighbor heard the man shouting and ran outside with a fire extinguisher. The neighbor was able to knock down the flames before first responders got there.
The man was brought to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
