PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a fire broke out in a Pawtucket parking lot late Thursday night. Pawtucket Detective Sergeant Theodore Georgitsis said first responders were called to the Chinese Christian Church just after 10:30 p.m. to investigate a wooden structure on fire in the parking lot. Georgitsis said a 61-year-old homeless man was living in the structure and had ignited a cardboard box to use it as a fireplace. The flames spread to the man's mattress and then to the wooden structure itself, as well as the nearby woods. Georgitsis said a neighbor heard the man shouting and ran outside with a fire extinguisher. The neighbor was able to knock down the flames before first responders got there. The man was brought to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Daily Roundup SIGN UP NOW
