A frigid forecast is ahead this weekend as the coldest air of the winter season arrives in the region. Strong winds are gusting from the northwest at 20-40 mph and we expect more wind this weekend. The video below shows the hourly temperature trends across KELOLAND. We should drop to 6 degrees in Sioux Falls by Saturday morning. Those steady winds on Saturday will prevent any meaningful warming. While scattered snow showers and flurries may develop, the best chances of light snow will stay in the Black Hills as we start the weekend. The wind chill forecast will be getting colder as we progress through the weekend. By Sunday morning, widespread wind chill reading in the minus 20s are likely, with a few minus 30s possible in northern SD. Monday morning will also be very cold with widespread -20s and -30s for wind chills. Frostbite can occur quickly on exposed skin in these conditions, so be prepared for the cold. We do expect some nice moderation to the temperatures starting on Tuesday into Wednesday. Here are the details of the forecast.
