Tracking rain to snow then a bitter blast of Arctic air
Jan 17, 2025
Brief thaw Friday with March 1st-like temperatures
What a way to end the work week! Friday will go down as the warmest day since December 31st with an official high of 46° in Indianapolis. Most of our hometowns were in similar territory with it feeling more like March outside. It made our snow depth melt and some areas of grass began to peek again.
This is a very typical scenario before the arrival of a cold blast. We'll begin to feel that cold late in the weekend and early next week. Before we get there, however, we have a weathermaker bringing rain and snow to our neck of the woods.
Rain, quick snow late Friday to early Saturday
Rain chances go up Friday evening and peak overnight. As the healthy rains get to nearly 100% coverage across central Indiana, this will turn over to snow before dawn Saturday. This will be the case in a few spots on a localized level. In spots where the rain/snow mix turns to all snow, a coating to 2.0" is possible early Saturday. All precipitation will end by late Saturday morning.
Bitter cold rushes in for early next week
The air will feel 50-60° colder than Friday with the upcoming cold blast heading our way. The jet stream will buckle. The core of Arctic air will slide south starting this weekend, bringing bitterly cold air around here. Highs Saturday in the upper 30s will be around Midnight as temperatures plummet Saturday afternoon.
Wind Chills at dangerous levels starting Sunday night. BRUTAL levels early Monday to as much as -25° are possible. This will be the story for early Monday and early Tuesday.
Overall, the cold pattern looks to remain for days. However, some relief from the BRUTAL cold will arrive in about a week. Temperatures will moderate through Thursday. 20s back on Wednesday and highs around freezing for Thursday and Friday.
