(WISH) — The National Weather Service on Friday afternoon issued extreme cold watches for parts of central and southern Indiana, and parts of Kentucky and Ohio. Both of the watches extend from late Sunday night through Wednesday morning In the Indiana counties of Fayette, Franklin, Wayne and Union, temperatures are expected to drop as low as 5 degrees below zero to 10 degrees below zero. Windchill readings are expected to drop as low as 15 degree below zero to 25 degrees below zero. In the Indiana counties of Dearborn, Ohio, Ripley and Switzerland, temperatures are expected to drop as low as zero to 5 degrees below zero. Windchill readings are expected to drop as low as 10 degree below zero to 15 degrees below zero. The extended period of very cold temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes, the weather service offices at Wilmington, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky, warned. To prevent water pipes from freezing, wrap, drain, or allow them to drip slowly. The National Weather Service’s Indianapolis office has issued a special statement warning of an area of arctic high pressure settling across central Indiana on Monday and Tuesday, bringing the coldest temperatures of the winter so far. The Indianapolis weather service statement says low temperatures on Monday morning and Tuesday morning will fall below zero at many locations. Windchills will fall as low as 10 below zero to 20 below zero with some isolated locations falling to 25 below zero on Monday and Tuesday mornings. (WISH Image) (WISH Image)
