WINSTON SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) -- Winston-Salem police said three kids were playing on a frozen pond when they fell through the ice. Neighbors stepped in to help immediately to get the kids out, but one of them was trapped and now has life-threatening injuries. The other two are expected to survive. “That is the sad reality of what happens when you test mother nature,” said Jennifer Pringle-Smith, who lives near the pond off of Duck Pond Court. Pringle-Smith has seen the pond every day for the past 20 years, but on Friday, it looks different knowing what happened out there. “I was devastated ... The last thing you want to hear about is somebody’s child falling in ... and not being able to get out,” Pringle-Smith said. She has never seen kids play on the pond before and says in the two decades she has been there, the ice has not been thick once. “Only for the geese. They can walk on top of it, but we can’t. Don’t go out there and start tapping because you will go through,” Pringle-Smith said. Another neighbor told FOX8 that she called 911 after a kid showed up at her door asking for help. She ran out with an extension chord to pull two kids to safety. Winston-Salem officers, firefighters, EMS and High Point dive team members worked to rescue the child and make sure everyone in the crowds that gathered stayed safe as well. Three kids and one adult were all taken to the hospital. The scene is clear, but the broken ice left is a reminder of the terrifying moments that happened and the tough days ahead. “My prayers are with you ... Keep your faith,” Pringle-Smith said. There has been a huge outpouring of support and prayers for the kids involved.
