WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) -- Winston-Salem police say they have found the body of a man who has been missing in the area for more than a week.
On Friday, Winston-Salem Police Lieutenant Barry Martin confirmed that they found Kim Whitehurst, 69, of Winston-Salem, dead.
At about 4:26 p.m., police responded to a call in the area of the 3100 block of Minart Drive, where they found Whitehurst's body in a deep ravine. Officers do not know his time of death and expect that the medical examiner will be able to provide more details following the examination.
Whitehurst was reported as a high-risk missing person on Jan. 5 after his son Sam Whitehurst couldn’t find him in his apartment when he dropped off food. His family described him as being in the early stages of what they believe to be dementia.
“A lady walked past me and said, 'He’s probably in the lunchroom,' so I ended up going down to the lunchroom. I ran into one of the administrators who knows him well and she said, ‘You look kind of lost. You look confused.’ and I was like. ‘I’m looking for my dad.’ and she said, ‘Who’s your dad?’ and I said, ‘Kim Whitehurst,' and she’s like, 'That’s so funny because I’ve been looking for him all day,” Sam said.
His family says he was a father, a grandfather and a Christian leader for over 30 years.
