SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WFRV) - As the January 19 deadline for a potential TikTok ban quickly approaches, creators across the country are voicing concerns about their futures. Bethany Werth, a Sheboygan-based TikTok influencer known as “thegirlwithmonolids” for her beauty content, is among those fearing for her livelihood. Suring Police Chief Kevin Schneider retires after 33 years of service Werth, who has spent over a year building her presence on the app, has turned her passion for makeup into a successful career. “I would post three times a day for like a year and a half at least, and I would push out a lot of beauty content, and I kept plugging along, and as time went by, I was able to grab an audience,” Werth said. For Werth, TikTok has become more than just a creative outlet. It’s a crucial source of income, covering her college tuition and allowing her to partner with well-known brands. “My income pays for all my college tuition, which is super good because I wouldn’t be able to afford my college tuition without TikTok,” she explained. “I’ve been able to work with a lot of cool brands and connect with a lot of different people, so it’s been fun.” However, with the potential TikTok ban looming, Werth and many others in the influencer community are facing significant uncertainty. According to Werth, a majority of her revenue comes from partnerships and brand deals on the app, leaving her anxious about what the future holds. “I would say that 90% of the revenue I make on social media comes from partnerships on TikTok. 90% is a very significant number, so the ban has me a little worried, obviously,” Werth said. Like many other creators, Werth is also concerned about the impact a ban could have on her community. The connections she’s built with followers, many of whom she’s helped with makeup tips, are invaluable to her. “I think that a lot of people have spent years building a community, and for that to be taken away is just as frustrating as the financial aspect,” Werth said. As TikTok's future hangs in the balance, Werth is preparing for the worst but remains hopeful that a solution will be found. Will spring come early in Wisconsin? NOAA releases weather predictions for all states “I have a lot of influencer friends that are very concerned. Some people like me are paying their tuition with this, some people are paying their rent with this, so it’s really frustrating and really scary,” she added. With the clock ticking down, creators like Werth are holding their breath, hoping that their careers and the communities they’ve built won’t be lost to a potential ban.
