One dead after two separate crashes on US 24

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- One is dead following two crashes that occurred on US 24 just over a mile apart from each other Friday afternoon.
According to a release from the Huntington County Sheriff's Department, the second crash occurred at US 24 and Old Fort Wayne Road just before 3:30 p.m.
According to the release, a semi-trailer was heading eastbound in the left lane and was slowed to turn onto Old Fort Wayne Road. The driver of a work van, also heading eastbound, failed to see the semi-trailer, striking the semi.
The driver of the work van attempted to avoid the impact, which caused them to drive off the roadway on the south side of US 24.
The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi-driver was uninjured in the crash.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash according to the release.
The crash is being investigated by the Huntington County Sheriff’s Office and the Huntington County Coroner’s Office.
The Huntington County Sheriff's Office posted another Facebook post just before 4 p.m. to avoid the area of N Old Fort Wayne Road & US-24 E after the crash occurred.
Initially, WANE 15 reported on a crash that occurred in the area of N 200 E and US 24 that was posted on the Huntington County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. According to Huntington County Dispatch, Indiana State Police (ISP) was leading the investigation for the crash.
ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Wes Rowlader told WANE 15 that one of the westbound lanes was shut down as a result of the 200 E and US 24 crash. The crash involved two vehicles and is said to have injuries, but it is unsure of the exact injuries.
