FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— Notre Dame and Ohio State will face off in the College Football National Championship on Monday. Both teams have freshmen from the Fort Wayne area on their roster. Tae Johnson, a North Side High School graduate, is a safety for the Fighting Irish. Mylan Graham, a New Haven graduate, is a wide receiver for the Buckeyes. Ben Johnson Jr., North Side's head football coach, said it feels incredible to have a former player of his on the national stage. "This is an opportunity that could be once in a lifetime," Johnson Jr. said. "[Tae] being a part of this is just amazing to watch." After recovering from an injury, Tae played in three games for the Fighting Irish this season. Coach Johnson Jr. said that at North Side, Tae was a player with a lot of talent, athleticism, and heart. "There's nothing that he can't do on the football field," Johnson Jr. said. "So, I knew him picking Notre Dame, he could go there, he could thrive and help that team win." Deaundre Muhammad, owner and CEO of Traction Athletic Performance in Fort Wayne, trained both Johnson and Graham. He keeps in touch with both and said it's a pretty big deal that two players from the same place are competing in this game. "I think it's especially unique," Muhammad said. "And I don't know when it will happen again. So, I'll definitely be watching." Jon Dettmer, a physical therapist with Fortify Physical Therapy, said Graham was disciplined while he was in his care. He said that Graham is incredibly fast, but with that came hamstring injuries. But Graham always worked hard to recover. "Mylan's got the ability to do things that almost no one else in the world can do," Dettmer said. "It must be fun to be that fast." Johnson Jr., Muhammad and Dettmer all think that Johnson and Graham will do big things in their college career and make it to the NFL.
