FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Heartland Cavalier Connection Inc. opened its hypothetical doors in December. The nonprofit rescue doesn't have a building, it puts dogs in foster homes until they find a "fur-ever" family. According to the Heartland Cavalier Connection website, the mission of the Fort Wayne-based rescue is to strive to provide compassionate care, foster lifelong connections, and educate the community about responsible pet ownership. Heartland Cavalier Connection only takes in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Cavalier mixes. "If we can pull Cavaliers from those larger shelters then they have more space for dogs. It also gives us the ability to specialize and be really good at meeting this specific breed's needs," said President of Heartland Cavalier Connection Trista Miller on why the rescue is breed-specific. Heartland Cavalier Connection is currently looking for more foster families. Fosterers receive extensive education to appropriately welcome dogs from many different backgrounds. Amber Toole is a current foster parent of Ronnie and a board member of Heartland Cavalier Connection. "There's a training class that everybody has to take. There's a lot of support from the board and the president to help you with that transition period. And then just a loving home that is prepared to kind of take on the challenges of, like, some early training of the dog, like teaching them not to jump on things or things like that," said Toole. Once a dog is taken into the care of Heartland Cavalier Connection it will be taken to one of the veterinarians that works with the organization. If the dog is not spayed or neutered, the rescue will have the dog fixed before it is adopted to its family. Heartland Cavalier Connection currently has two dogs in its care. It anticipates having around 35 in its inaugural year. The rescue posts adoptable dogs and ways to help on its website and social media.
