Man sentenced for child sex crime after family discovers relationship with minor

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A man who was found hiding in the bedroom of a 15-year-old was sentenced for criminal sexual conduct with a minor Wednesday, according to the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.
Abel Sanjuan Tranquilino pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to eight years in prison by Judge Milton G. Kimpson, the attorney general’s office said.
It all started when family members of a 15-year-old found Tranquilino hiding in the minor’s bedroom in June 2022. The family then contacted Charleston County Detective James Jacko on Aug. 25, 2022, and told Jacko about the situation.
An investigation began and family members found out that Tranquilino and the minor had been communicating on a phone Tranquilino had given her.
When they searched the phone, they found explicit photos Tranquilino had sent the victim, investigators explained.
In addition to the photos, the minor admitted Tranquilino had engaged in sexual activity with her.
Judge Kimpson gave Tranquilino credit for the 862 days he had already served. When Tranquilino is released, he will have to register as a sex offender.
