Date announced for annual Point in Time Count in Bismarck
Jan 17, 2025
BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health is going to conduct its annual Unsheltered Point in Time (PIT) Count this coming Wednesday, January 22.
Carried out in partnership with local service providers, community organizations, and volunteers, the PIT Count is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in order to capture data on sheltered and unsheltered homelessness.
The data is used for securing federal funding and informing local strategies to address homelessness.
“The Point in Time Count helps us better understand the scope of homelessness in our community and the unique challenges faced by individuals and families without shelter,” said Renae Moch, Public Health Director for Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health. “This data is critical for informing policy decisions, tailoring local services, and demonstrating the need for resources to address homelessness.”

The PIT Count is organized by communities across the nation to identify and count individuals experiencing homelessness on a single night. Volunteers and outreach teams visit places where they might stay, including streets, parks, and other public areas.
“Homelessness is a complex issue that requires collaboration and commitment from the entire community," said Mark Heinert, President of the Missouri Valley Coalition for Homeless People. "The PIT Count provides the data we need to advocate for effective solutions and ensure everyone has access to safe and stable housing. We believe that everyone deserves to have a place to call home.”
Community members interested in participating will work as part of an outreach team to collect data and distribute essential items such as blankets, clothing, and hygiene kits. The data will be analyzed and shared with the community later in the year.
