BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- Louisiana is forecasted to have extremely cold weather next week with the chances of a winter storm trending upward again. Enjoy the next day of warmer weather because it will quickly become very cold. All Louisiana state offices will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 21. Extreme cold weather in Louisiana next week 🥶 Monday morning will be very chilly with lows in the 20s. Highs will only be near 40 degrees. Dry weather is expected during the day but that could change that evening and overnight. Snow looks to be in the forecast again for Tuesday. Enough moisture from the Gulf should stream into south Louisiana. Moisture mixing with the frigid air could cause winter precipitation. Louisiana may see its first snow flurries late Monday night. Snow showers will increase overnight and continue throughout the day. Highs will be near freezing on Tuesday. Morning lows will be in the teens and low 20s. Closures: Baton Rouge area schools, offices closed Tuesday due to winter weather Wednesday will be very cold with morning lows in the 20s and highs near 40 degrees. Since temperatures will barely be above freezing, the roads won't be safe for traveling. Wednesday will be a drier day but there might be a few more showers, possibly another wintry mix between Thursday and Friday. The amount of snow accumulation that is expected could change. This map based on the GFS model shows around 4 inches of snow for Baton Rouge on Tuesday. Central Louisiana and the northwestern corner of our viewing area could see slightly higher amounts. After the newer model runs come out, we might see an increase or a decrease in the totals. If every layer of the atmosphere from the clouds down to the surface is at or below freezing, then we'll have snow. If just a small amount of warmer air is in place near the surface or higher up in the atmosphere, then we'll have to deal with freezing rain or sleet. Please be prepared for some type of winter precipitation. Weekend weather forecast for Jan. 17-19 🌥️☔ High temperatures will be in the low to mid-60s Friday and skies will be mostly cloudy. Isolated showers will move through Friday evening and isolated to scattered showers will move through overnight. Saturday morning will be warmer as morning lows will be in the 50s. Highs will be near 70 degrees on Saturday. Have an umbrella or rain jacket with you if you'll be participating in the Louisiana Marathon. Rain should end in the early afternoon at the latest.  Temperatures will slowly drop on Saturday evening. Temperatures will likely be in the 60s during the early evening, falling into the low 50s between dinnertime and midnight. Bundle up Sunday morning if you're running in the marathon. Morning lows will be in the 30s and highs will be in the 40s. Extreme cold weather safety tips 🧣 The National Weather Service suggests minimizing travel, staying indoors and keeping winter survival kit supplies in your car if you do have to travel. Other tips include learning how to shut off water valves to avoid pipe bursts, checking on the elderly and bringing pets inside.
