BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The trial of a man charged with murder in connection with the 2023 crash that killed Arvin educator Larry Hallum has been postponed from late January to August.
A new trial date of Aug. 11 was set Friday in the case of Marque Qualls after Deputy Public Defender Jacob Evans said multiple investigations were pending and he needed time to conduct a Franklin investigation, which involves looking into potentially mitigating factors -- including cognitive ability and upbringing -- for defendants who were under 26 when the crime occurred.

Qualls was 25 when arrested after the Feb. 15, 2023, collision between his and Hallum’s vehicles at the intersection of Old River Road and White Lane. Police say in court documents that Qualls admitted trying to kill himself by intentionally crashing.
Qualls had a blood-alcohol content of 0.18%, more than twice the legal limit, according to court documents. Hallum died in a hospital weeks after the crash.
